Discovering the college that’s right for you doesn’t have to be difficult—the key is asking the right questions. Let’s take a look at some of the specific questions you might ask a prospective college’s enrollment counselor as you search to find the school and degree program that match your needs.

Financial Aid

1. Does the school offer financial aid?

2. Can you assist me in finding financial aid, both federal and private?

3. What percentage of the college’s students has financial aid?

4. What’s the cost per credit, and how many credits are required to complete my degree?  

Class Curriculum

1. Can I transfer credits? What is the process for that?

2. Where can I find a list of courses required to complete the degree?

3. How long does it take students to complete a Bachelor’s degree?

4. What level of interaction exists between students and professors—will there be opportunity to discuss my work and grades?

5. How would I get to know other students? Would this happen via email, chat, or otherwise?

Resources

1. What type of computer, software, and online connection will I need?

2. What is the college’s student attrition rate?

3. How many hours a week should I dedicate to studying if I’m to get my degree on time?

4. Does the college have many students who are working full time and/or are parents?

5. Does the college have an online library?  

Career

[NOTE: “Career” may not sound like it pertains directly to a college degree program. However, because aiding your career is the main point of earning your degree, the answers to these questions are of high importance.]

1. What are some examples of jobs graduates land once they’ve completed the degree program I’m interested in?

2. What’s the salary range for these jobs?

3. What do companies and corporations think of graduates from the college? Is it respected in the professional world?

4. Does the college have a placement program to help students land jobs after graduating?
